The Magic of Whatipu Tour
This is a tour for the person who loves to get away from it all. Whatipu is a stunning beautiful area of coastal dunes and wetlands, and this is what Anthony Doesburg, MSN NZ Travel writer, has to say about it "When Aucklanders head for the west coast, Whatipu isn't usually the first beach they set off for. That's probably only because it's not the easiest drive. It's further than Piha, Karekare or Bethells, with a narrow, windy section at the end. Not to mention dusty. But the 40 minutes or so that it takes to drive the 40km from central Auckland is well worth it".
- We visit Ponsonby to sample and purchase delicacies for our ‘alfresco’ picnic lunch. We will choose from the finest of home grown and imported ingredients to put together a delicious gourmet picnic of fresh baked breads, New Zealand cheeses, relishes, cold meats, seafood, salads, fruit and wine. Or if you choose to take the Sunset Tour we will head to Titirangi first and return to Ponsonby to dine.
- On to scenic Titirangi, the gateway to the Waitekere Ranges Regional Park with more than 16,000ha of native rainforest and coastline. Its 250km of walking and tramping tracks provide access to beaches, breathtaking vistas, spectacular rocky outcrops, streams, waterfalls and farms overlooking the wild west coast. Here we will visit Lopdell House Gallery where the focus is to present contemporary art through a diverse programme of exhibitions and events. Located in historic Lopdell house in scenic Titirangi. And then take a short walk to the home of Colin McCahon, New Zealand’s most famous modernist artist.
- Then it is on to Huia and Whatipu. This road is extremely scenic and views are breathtaking. There will be opportunities to stop to enjoy as we will stop and take a couple of short walks through pretty native bush to lookouts with magnificent views of the stunning coastline and Manakau bar.
- At Whatipu there will be plenty of time to immerse yourself in the grandeur of the place, walk on the soft black sand, explore the dunes and watch the native birdlife.
